Summary

The Buy Side is Turney Duff's high-adrenaline journey through the trading underworld, as well as a searing look at an after-hours Wall Street culture where sex and drugs are the quid pro quo and a billion isn't enough。 In the mid-2000's, Turney Duff was, to all appearances, the very picture of American success。 One of Wall Street's hottest traders, he was a rising star with Raj Rajaratnam's legendary Galleon Group before forging his own path。 In The Buy Side, the money is plentiful and the after-hours indulgence even more so, which has proved to be a bestselling and box office winning combination, as the success of The Wolf of Wall Street attests。 Fans of Martin Scorsese's film and Michael Lewis's Liar's Poker and The Big Short will want to take a walk on The Buy Side。 This paperback book has 296 pages and measures: 19。7 x 12。5 x 1。8cm

One of the best books I've read in years。 It's so fast paced, but a tragedy。 It gives some insight in to the life of some on Wall Street, and I have no reason to not believe it。 The write seems to write very honestly and openly。 One of the best books I've read in years。 It's so fast paced, but a tragedy。 It gives some insight in to the life of some on Wall Street, and I have no reason to not believe it。 The write seems to write very honestly and openly。 。。。more

I was incredibly bored and only made it halfway

Like author says - he wrote it for himself。 Mote about drug abuse than about wallstreet life

Turney gives a transparent look into the world of hedge funds。 H writes well about his experience in coming from the middle class to making more money he could dream of。。。and the ups and downs that come with that process。 Where this book lacks I feel is that his style of writing, where he sounded a bit cold and clinical throughout the entire book, even when there's were times when he should have been warm。 Maybe it's a hedge fund/finance thing to always try to be cool and collected, I don't know Turney gives a transparent look into the world of hedge funds。 H writes well about his experience in coming from the middle class to making more money he could dream of。。。and the ups and downs that come with that process。 Where this book lacks I feel is that his style of writing, where he sounded a bit cold and clinical throughout the entire book, even when there's were times when he should have been warm。 Maybe it's a hedge fund/finance thing to always try to be cool and collected, I don't know。 But I'd still recommend the book。 。。。more

I believe Turney exaggerated the truth some but it made for a fun read。 Anyone that did as much coke over such a long period of time would have a nose made of mush。

Entertaining story by a deeply flawed individual。 Covers a period of timing covering the tech boom, 9/11, FBI investigation of Galleon and Raj Rajaratnam and the subprime and collateralized debt crisis。 Black Edge covers the investigation into Galleon well, although Turney writes with a personal knowledge of Rajaratnam。 Unsurprising he now consults for Billions。Outlines how commission stuffing and juicing stocks are paid back in return by priority IPO allocations, and putting the buy side up or Entertaining story by a deeply flawed individual。 Covers a period of timing covering the tech boom, 9/11, FBI investigation of Galleon and Raj Rajaratnam and the subprime and collateralized debt crisis。 Black Edge covers the investigation into Galleon well, although Turney writes with a personal knowledge of Rajaratnam。 Unsurprising he now consults for Billions。Outlines how commission stuffing and juicing stocks are paid back in return by priority IPO allocations, and putting the buy side up or the covering of the other side of their trades by brokers they have previously funnelled commission to。Demonstrates how personal networking and quid pro quo can see one go further than knowledge of finance or stocks。 A fitting elogy for the once and future wall street。The Billionare's Apprentice seems like the next book to follow, as the contents are touched upon here and heavily recommended in Black Edge。 。。。more

I couldn't put this book down。 It's an up and down rollercoaster of drugs, money and pain。 Just when you think Turney's heading for a better life, it's flipped upside down。Would highly recommend for a lesson in not doing drugs, basically! Working in finance, I’ve always heard about the “Wall Street guys”。 I appreciated you sharing your story Turney! You helped me appreciate the culture I have experienced in my practice these past 5 years。 Glad you were able to get out & restart!

This book gives me fresh perecptive to consider switching career personally since I work in securities industry on Wall Street。 A real heartfelt tale of a Wall Street trader, money does not mean anything if you don't have the health or time to enjoy it。 Alcohol and substances are a disaster combination for a stressful job like trading。 This book gives me fresh perecptive to consider switching career personally since I work in securities industry on Wall Street。 A real heartfelt tale of a Wall Street trader, money does not mean anything if you don't have the health or time to enjoy it。 Alcohol and substances are a disaster combination for a stressful job like trading。 。。。more

As someone who works in Finance, I am well aware of the stereotypes placed upon people that work in this industry。 While this book certainly touches upon all these stereotypes, it also reveals an unspoken side of Wall Street as well: You can earn a boatload of money, but your health and personal relationships will suffer。 I have a lot of respect for anyone that writes about his/her life。 Turney Duff could have easily sugar coated his experience on Wall Street like most books in this genre do。 In As someone who works in Finance, I am well aware of the stereotypes placed upon people that work in this industry。 While this book certainly touches upon all these stereotypes, it also reveals an unspoken side of Wall Street as well: You can earn a boatload of money, but your health and personal relationships will suffer。 I have a lot of respect for anyone that writes about his/her life。 Turney Duff could have easily sugar coated his experience on Wall Street like most books in this genre do。 Instead, he was very honest about his addiction and how it impacted his career and personal life。 You shouldn't go into this book expecting to learn a lot about finance and Wall Street。 Instead, you should expect to read about a man who experienced the highest highs and lowest lows a person can go through。 。。。more

Full of the wall street tropes we're all used to and have heard countless times before, yet arresting and enjoyable for the reflective, earnest and fast paced writing。 Full of the wall street tropes we're all used to and have heard countless times before, yet arresting and enjoyable for the reflective, earnest and fast paced writing。 。。。more

Lots of repetitive stories。 Written very simply- like a diary of a recovering addict。

Probably one of the most interesting books I've read this year。 I couldn't keep my eyes off the pages- how Turney shares his experience of being on the buy side and the crazy stories of being in Wall Street。 Really appreciated his story and found it very entertaining。 Probably one of the most interesting books I've read this year。 I couldn't keep my eyes off the pages- how Turney shares his experience of being on the buy side and the crazy stories of being in Wall Street。 Really appreciated his story and found it very entertaining。 。。。more

kept me glued-in。 Really captures starting humbly as an underdog, to overtaking the average, ivy-league bankers who actually "fit in" to banking culture。 From greed, massive capitalism dreams, to downfall of a family, addiction, etc。 There are a lot of great elements to this story。 It's well written without being scatter-brained。 kept me glued-in。 Really captures starting humbly as an underdog, to overtaking the average, ivy-league bankers who actually "fit in" to banking culture。 From greed, massive capitalism dreams, to downfall of a family, addiction, etc。 There are a lot of great elements to this story。 It's well written without being scatter-brained。 。。。more

This was such a depressing and soul destroying book on so many levels。 It’s a first person account that gives one a front row view of the utter uselessness of wall street to society and to the greater economy。 Our erstwhile narrator flits from one wall street firm to another learning the tricks of the trade。 It purports to give a view of the "hard" life of a trader – the Wolf of Wall Street type who laid bare are merely socio and psychopaths whose attenuation for greed is their only driving forc This was such a depressing and soul destroying book on so many levels。 It’s a first person account that gives one a front row view of the utter uselessness of wall street to society and to the greater economy。 Our erstwhile narrator flits from one wall street firm to another learning the tricks of the trade。 It purports to give a view of the "hard" life of a trader – the Wolf of Wall Street type who laid bare are merely socio and psychopaths whose attenuation for greed is their only driving force, besides perhaps drug consumption。 One need look no further than this tale of buy side trading to see the wasted effort of coming up on the good side of a bet, fleecing clients and long term shareholders in the process。 The author mentions only in passing working for Raj Rajaratnam, who was convicted of insider trading and sentenced to 11 years of hard time。 That the author didn’t befall this same fate is somehow confusing as he basically admits to using similar tactics。 In all, an indicting view of wall street excess that should serve as a rallying cry for the pitchforks to come out, or at the very least sensible oversight of these immoral charlatans。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Oh man。 This book took me on one hell of a sweet ride。 I mainly read political books。 So, when I picked up this book, I thought it would expose Wall Street’s inner dealings from a political perspective。 To my surprise and great interest, I’d be wrong。 This book was so real, it was filled with ironies。 Like, the way Duff made fun of Baby Arm’s fashion choices then years later he’d show up to a corporate charity event dressed in an orange jumpsuit like he’s going to the Met Galla。 There are numero Oh man。 This book took me on one hell of a sweet ride。 I mainly read political books。 So, when I picked up this book, I thought it would expose Wall Street’s inner dealings from a political perspective。 To my surprise and great interest, I’d be wrong。 This book was so real, it was filled with ironies。 Like, the way Duff made fun of Baby Arm’s fashion choices then years later he’d show up to a corporate charity event dressed in an orange jumpsuit like he’s going to the Met Galla。 There are numerous other ironies as well captured almost too perfectly in this book。 This aspect makes the book feel so personal to me, so raw and real。 I just never want this book to end。 From the beginning of this book, I thought Duff had a somewhat boastful about his position, earnings, outings and his nose。 So I was more than happy to see how his ego was gonna be taken down a notch。 And, when I inched closer to the middle to the last few chapters my heart sank to stomach。 I found myself on board the Duff express train going to success station。 His writing style both captivated me as a reader as well as, painted him as the villain and hero of his own book。 。。。more

Opens up well, bores in the middle and dies woefully towards the end。。。 that is my summary of this one。 The introduction to Turneys childhood and switch from college writer to 'Pawn scum' junior trader was very interesting and generally got me excited and looking forward to continuing with the book。However once settled into Wall Street the book takes a turn for the worse。 I got the impression that this guy watched 'The Wolf of Wall Street' and thought "I'll have some of that"。 Turney Duff believ Opens up well, bores in the middle and dies woefully towards the end。。。 that is my summary of this one。 The introduction to Turneys childhood and switch from college writer to 'Pawn scum' junior trader was very interesting and generally got me excited and looking forward to continuing with the book。However once settled into Wall Street the book takes a turn for the worse。 I got the impression that this guy watched 'The Wolf of Wall Street' and thought "I'll have some of that"。 Turney Duff believes that he is quite literally the s**t。 Everyone on Wall Street wants a piece of the action and therefor in turn a piece of Mr Duff。 A good 70% of this book could have summed up in 1 page - I was drunk, I did a lot of cocaine, I went to rehab and still screwed my Wife & child over。 The end of the book is even more bleak。 It appears that Turney is so paranoid from years of substance abuse that he believes the feds are after him for whatever reason。 Time flies by very quickly at the end of the book and chapters pass by with nothing but emptiness。 I wouldn't recommend this one even if you good get through it within a weekend 。。。more

This was a super entertaining read。 Turney Duff is a guy that didn't know what he wanted to do with his life, lucked into finance at the right place and time, became successful on Wall Street and then crashed and burned because of the temptations that come with success。This isn't your typical Wall Street book though。 Turney has a great sense of humor and that humor lightens the mood in the right places without turning the more serious parts of the story into a farce。 I really got the sense that This was a super entertaining read。 Turney Duff is a guy that didn't know what he wanted to do with his life, lucked into finance at the right place and time, became successful on Wall Street and then crashed and burned because of the temptations that come with success。This isn't your typical Wall Street book though。 Turney has a great sense of humor and that humor lightens the mood in the right places without turning the more serious parts of the story into a farce。 I really got the sense that he was brutally honest about his experiences, and I felt like I was getting an inside story about the life of a buy side trader -- both the good and the bad。 This book was a page-turner for me and I finished it in a few late nights。 Definitely one of the better business/finance stories I've read in a long time。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Turney Duff's story is fascinating。 It is sad, exciting, edgy, candid, blunt and most importantly honest。 The book is well written with fantastic analogies that paint a very real picture。 Writing reminds me of WSJ's Jason Gay who makes articles on weighted blankets exciting and a must read。 Turney Duff's story is fascinating。 It is sad, exciting, edgy, candid, blunt and most importantly honest。 The book is well written with fantastic analogies that paint a very real picture。 Writing reminds me of WSJ's Jason Gay who makes articles on weighted blankets exciting and a must read。 。。。more
